Title: Upgrade Steps From Exchange Good Version 5 to Version 6

Here are some notes to review when planning a GMM 5 to GMM 6 upgrade and migration. This is not intended to replace Upgrade Documentation or Good Administrators Guide on our Documents web site however spending a few minutes understanding these notes will help make the upgrade process an easier experience.

Terminology used in the Upgrade Document - The word Migration in the Upgrade document is used to indicate migrating or importing Good Management Console data into SQL database; it does not mean physically moving users from one server to another.

Once installed, run the GMM Migration Utility Standalone application from the Start Menu. The application will determine the existing location of the GMM server's cache directory, and will prompt for a location to make a copy of a cache database file to simulate the upgrade phase. This utility will test the steps necessary to upgrade the 5.0 Server to 6.0 without affecting current Version 5.0 service to users. Note: A critical error indicating a missing user cache directory may be logged. This error is typically benign. Check the GMC to ensure that the user in question is correctly present or absent; clean up the user entry as necessary. The Standalone Utility has a separate executable file (not included in setup.exe) in the Good Server 6 installation folder. This utility is uninstalled using Windows/Settings/Control Panel/Add/Remove Programs. The test migration of GMM Server private data involves installing a standalone application on the actual GMM Server Version 5.0. The application does an analysis of the existing GMM Server data and does a test mode migration of the GMM server data.

Migration Options - (moving from one Good Server to another using Good version 6)

To physically migrate users from a Good 5 host to a Good 6 host one of two options are available:

1. This option is recommended: Install 5.0.x build on new host and perform migration as indicated in Chapter 7 of Good Administrators Guide version 5; then upgrade to Good 6.x

2. Upgrade old Good Server to 6.0 and then perform migration as indicated in Chapter 7 in the Good Administrators Guide version 6.

UPGRADE INSTRUCTIONS

1. Check the hardware specifications before installing the Good Administration Center (GAC) - GoodAdmin Guide Chapter 3 - Most existing Good Servers running version 5.x or older do not have enough processor power, memory and perhaps not enough hard drive space.
2. Perform exports (Page 4 of Upgrade Notes from previous edition document): User list, user statistics, roles (effective rights)
3. Copy the cache folder while both Good services are stopped - C:Program files/Good Technology/Good Messaging Server/Cache
4. Copy the master index: C:Program files/Good Technology/Good Management Server/Archive/
5. Install the GAC (Good Administration Center).
6. Stop Good Messaging Server and Good Management Server service and install the Good Migration Utility (GMU); Then start Good Messaging Server and Good Management Server service.
7. Run Good Migration Utility (GMU) test mode utility - Save and Print logs - DO NOT EXIT OUT OF TEST MODE IN THE GAC (Good Administration Center)
8. Install GMM Migration Test Stand Alone utility (Found in the Good Server 6 Server installation folder). This tests the connectivity between Good Messaging Server 5 and the Good Administration Center). Allow for enough disk space for test data to be created during this test phase. The amount of space required is roughly 25 KB per handheld that is managed by the GMM server being test migrated. Again stop Good Messaging Server and Good Management Server services to install tool then restart services.
9. Run GMM Migration Test Stand Alone utility - The application will determine the existing location of the GMM server's cache directory, and will prompt for a location to make a copy of a cache database file to simulate the upgrade phase. If you are unable to run the StandAlone utility stop the GMU services and try again.
10. Fix GMU Test and GMM Stand Alone Utility Log errors.
11. Run GMU test and GMM Stand Alone Utility Log, save and print logs until NO errors are returned. Exit out of Test Mode and Read Mode.
12. Uninstall GMM Migration Test Stand Alone utility using Windows/Settings/Control/Add/Remove Programs
13. Run Real-Mode GMU migration and save logs
14. Upgrade Good Messaging Server from 5 to 6.
15. Using version Good 6 setup.exe, remove GMU.
16. Uninstall Good Management Console and Good Management Server using Good Server 5 setup.exe file.
