Title: How to move the Good Mobile Messaging Server (GMM) configuration to new hardware when the existing hardware is inaccessible

Question: The following is information to be used when moving the GMM configuration to new hardware when the old host is inaccessible. This could mean that the previous GMM host experienced a hardware failure (e.g. dead hard drive) or was subject to an external disaster (e.g. fire). If the previous GMM host and/or the cache directory is still accessible (e.g. Host intermittently fails or GMM cache is stored on a SAN or external storage) do not use this document and instead refer to either Article ID 13025 How to move the Good Mobile Messaging Server to new hardware or the Admin Guide for further move or failover instructions. This document assumes that Exchange is functional and that the GoodAdmin and Good Mobile Messaging enabled mailboxes are accessible.

Answer:

Step I - Gather Information

Obtain the following information pertaining to the inaccessible GMM server as it will be needed to recover.

*GMM server install name, serial number, license key
- Available in your Good Monitoring Portal (GMP) account - www.good.com/gmp in the Manage Servers and Manage Server Licenses sections.

- Note: The GMM server install name is usually, but not necessarily the same as the computer host name.)
*GoodAdmin (domain/username), GoodAdmin mailbox name, and Exchange server name where the GoodAdmin mailbox resides.

Step II - Install the Good Management Server (GMS) and Console (GMC) and Then Manually Delete the Inaccessible Server Object

#. On the new host machine, log on as the domain GoodAdmin account and install *only* the Good Management server and Console components. Setup package: www.good.com/download - For information on Good Management Server prerequisites and installation please review the Admin Guide that is included with the setup package.

  1. Run Regedit from the new host.
  2. Add the string value HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Good Technology/Good Management Console/show server delete with a value data = 1
  3. Launch the Good Management Console (GMC)from the new host. Expand the Users folder and verify that all GMM enabled users are present. If they are not present please do not proceed without first contacting Good Technical Support for assistance.
  4. In the GMC, click the Servers folder, then right click on the inaccessible server object that you are trying to recover and choose delete. (The object will be re-created in step III)
  5. Exit the GMC

Step III - Install the GMM Server Component on the New Host

  1. On the new host machine, log on as the domain GoodAdmin account and install the GMM component. Setup package: www.good.com/download - For information on GMM prerequisites and installation please review the Admin Guide that is included with the setup package.
  2. When prompted, enter the same GMM name, serial number, license key, and GoodAdmin exchange mailbox as the previous Good Mobile Messaging server!

  3. You must enter the old GMM server install name on this installation screen. If you do not enter the old GMM name your users will have to be re-added to the Good Management Console and re-provisioned. If you did not head this note the first time through then you may re-install the GMM software to correct this value.

  4. Proceed through the rest of the installation with the default options, adjusting directory locations as needed for the new host.

Step IV - Choices for Recovering Device Synchronization

  1. Since the GMM cache was not able to be recovered from the previous host, all synchronization services will be disconnected when the GMM service is started. Users will receive "You have been disconnected from remote. Press "R" to reconnect."
  2. Contact your Good enabled users and instruct them to press "r" on their device. If they have not received the error message have them soft reset their device and/or try sending an email from it to trigger the error. Set the expectation that the device will freeze for a few seconds, reboot, and then reinitialize GMM in the "Connect" phase of the setup. Presuming that the device has sufficient data coverage the synchronization services should reconnect in a matter of minutes, and the contents of their mailbox, contacts, calendar, etc will follow soon after. Please note that this could take longer depending on how many users are trying to recover simultaneously.

Handhelds with software prior to GoodLink 3.0 will only synch new messages going forward. Handhelds with software post GMM 3.0, will synchronize the last 100 emails in the Inbox and Sent items folder. If a user needs more than the default 100 past emails to synchronize to the handheld and are running the 3.0 GMM client or later, use the following DEBUG command:

fetch <number> <folder>

For example:
fetch 200 Inbox

Folder hierarchy can be shown with colons like "meetings:jan:staff". Spaces are allowed as are most other values. For more information, simply enter fetch in the handheld debugger.

Wildcard example:
fetch 10 inbox:*

Note: be very careful with the wildcard. The above example will retrieve 10 emails from every subfolder under Inbox. If the user has 100 subfolders under Inbox, that's a 1000 emails.
