Moving Good Messaging Server to a New Host

If you are moving the Good Messaging Server to a different host in the course of a Good Messaging upgrade, be sure to read the Good Messaging Upgrade Note that comes with the new version. When upgrading to Good Messaging Version 4.x from GoodLink pre-3.0 versions, for example, the Upgrade Note reminds you that in addition to installing Good Messaging Server on the new host, you will also need to install Good Management Server. Also, you must be logged on as a GoodAdmin user to use the Console for the first time. Exchange administrators cannot use the Console without first using the new Role-Based Administration feature of the Console to assign access rights.

Follow these steps to move Good Messaging Server to a new host.

  1. Navigate to the registry of the existing Good Messaging Server.
  2. From this registry, record the server name, serial number, license key, mailbox name, cache directory, Windows logged-on user name (domain\username), and Exchange server name where the Good Messaging mailbox resides. (Note: The Good Messaging Server name is usually the same as the computer name.)
  3. These parameters are located in the registry of Good Messaging Server under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Good Technology/GoodLink Install Parameters/.

Also export the "LoginKey" (String value) registry entry under [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/ GoodTechnology/GoodLink Install Parameters].

  4. Prepare the new host with all Good Messaging Server prerequisites.
  5. Uninstall Good Messaging Server (but not Good Management Server or Good Management Console) from its current machine. Accept the "typical" uninstall to retain user configurations when you do so. You will need the saved files from this machine later.
  6. From a machine with Good Management Console installed, do the following.
    1. Add the following string value to the registry under the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Good Technology\GoodLink Management Console:
    2. Show Server Delete = 1

Note: There are spaces between each word. This is a String value.
    1. Launch Good Management Console and click on the Servers node.
    2. Right-click on the name of the server that is to be uninstalled (make sure you write down EXACTLY what the name of this server is) and choose "Delete" and then "Yes."
  1. On the new Good Messaging Server machine do the following:
    1. Log on as the domain\username recorded earlier.
    2. Copy the contents of the cache directory from the old machine to the same place in the new machine.
Note that your cache directory should be set as in the following example during installation and have the following files under the root:

==>Your cache path during installation: D:\cache\example

==>Contents of cache from root

D:\cache\example>dir

Volume in drive D is WidgetD

Volume Serial Number is 54FD-62CB

    1. Delete the file 'dbfiles.lck' from the directory with the same name as the server, as it exists in the cache directory. Typically this will be:
    2. C:\Program Files\Good Technology\Good Messaging Server\cache\<server name>\dbfiles.lck.

    3. Create the "GoodTechnology"/"GoodLink Install Parameters" hierarchy in the Registry and import the LoginKey.
    4. Install Good Messaging Server using the same serial number, license key, Exchange mailbox, and server name as the old one. You will probably need to override the default for server name. DON'T start the Good Messaging services.
Warning: The host name of the new host machine may be different. Ensure that you enter the original server name. If you do not enter the SAME Good Messaging Server name, when the Good Messaging Service starts, handheld users may be disconnected and require their handheld(s) to be set up again.
    1. When prompted for the cache-directory location, select the cache directory that you copied from the old server:
    2. D:\cache\example

    3. When prompted, choose not to start the Good Messaging Services automatically.
    4. Install Good Management Console.
    5. Launch Good Management Console. Verify that all users with active handhelds are listed in the user folder.
    6. Start the Good Messaging Services.
    7. After 40 minutes, verify that user handhelds are synchronizing correctly.
  1. If you will be moving Good Messaging users from an Exchange server to a different Exchange server, follow the procedure given in "Moving a Handheld to a Different Exchange Server"
  2. Warning: Do not use the Exmerge utility to move user mailboxes. Using Exmerge to move a mailbox will lead to setting up the user handheld again.
