Daylight Saving Time

Daylight Saving Time (DST) - Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is changing with US Daylight Saving Time?
  2. In 2006, the United States Congress and Canadian Parliament passed a bill which adjusts the start and end time for Daylight Saving Time. The starting and ending dates for Daylight Saving Time are changing in the U.S. and Canada as of 2007 are:
    • DST will start three weeks earlier (2:00 A.M. on the second Sunday in March, 03.11.2007).
    • DST will end one week later (2:00 A.M. on the first Sunday in November, 11.04.2007).
  3. What is changing with Western Australia Daylight Saving Time?
  4. On Tuesday 21 November, 2006, the Western Australia (WA) parliament passed a bill to introduce daylight saving for a three year trial period. The start and end dates for the daylight saving periods are:

    Start End
The hour of 2 a.m. on
    3 December 2006
The hour of 2 a.m. on
    25 March 2007
The hour of 2 a.m. on
    28 October 2007
The hour of 2 a.m. on
    30 March 2008
The hour of 2 a.m. on
    26 October 2008
The hour of 2 a.m. on
    29 March 2009
Note that the times are specified as standard time, so these periods end at 3:00 a.m. daylight time.
  5. What are the steps specific to Western Australia DST?
  6. Are mobile devices and Good software affected?
    • Yes, all Good Mobile Messaging supported devices will be affected and Good Server and Client software will need to be upgraded due to the changes in Daylight Saving Time.
    • Good Client software - customers MUST upgrade to Good Mobile Messaging 4.9.3 client software (available end of February 2007).
    • Good Server software - customers MUST upgrade to Good Messaging Server for Exchange version 4.9.3 and Good Messaging Server for Domino version 4.5.6 (available February 28, 2007).
    • Windows 2003 and Mobitex devices are not supported. There is also no fix or official work around for the extended DST changes for WM 2003 devices and Mobitex devices.

An unsupported workaround for Windows Mobile 2003 users is to follow the steps outlined below:

      1. Change device time manually to match current time in Extended DST time period.
      2. On the second Sunday in March (March 11, 2007), Go to Good Launcher - > Preferences - > Time zone and select a time zone one hour ahead (e.g. if user is in "Pacific Time" zone, then use "Mountain Time" zone).
      3. Also uncheck the Observe Daylight Saving Time checkbox
      4. On the first Sunday in November, (November 4, 2007) when the DST period ends, users should revert back to their current time zone. In the above example it would be Pacific Time.

This workaround will allow users to see the calendar appointments correctly on their device.

      * * * For this WM2003 unsupported work around only, users are strongly advised not to create appointments from their handheld as they may be off by an hour. * * *

These steps have to be repeated every year.

  7. What happens if I don't upgrade my Good software to version 4.9.3?
    • The Good Mobile Messaging calendar events and reminders will be off by one hour
    • Appointments created from the device will be off by one hour
    • The display of clock/time will be off by one hr if the device is not configured to receive it's time and timezone from the wireless network.
    • All other functionality will work normally and will not be impacted
    • All other Good Messaging services (Good Mobile Intranet, Good Mobile Defense, Good Management Console, and Good Monitoring Portal) will not be impacted

    • Device Manufacturer DST Patches are not needed for Good Mobile Messaging but is recommended for other applications on the device.
    • Users should ensure that the device clock matches the current time during the extended DST period.
    • The effects of the "device time" being incorrect are:
      • Display of clock/time on Home screen
      • Current meeting cursor / grayed-out hours in current day will be off by one hour
      • Reminders off by one hour
  11. What happens if I do not follow the five steps outlined above?
  12. The table below provides possible update scenarios and outcomes. It is based the following example: A single occurrence appointment made on Jan 11, 2007 for March 12, 2007 (before OS DST patches have been made).

    Update Scenario Outcome
1 No updates applied (GM Client previous to 4.9.1.2) The appointment time is correctly displayed but user will be late by 1 hour if using Desktop time.

Appointment time correctly displayed on the device if device time is correct.
